A Mississauga law firm spent $3,000 on Google Ads and got zero leads. 8 months later, the same channel was producing 19 leads each month at $86 per conversion.
The Problem: Every New Client Came From a Referral
Provident Law LLP is an Ontario-based law firm built by a husband-and-wife team practicing criminal and real estate law. The legal work was strong and the clients they served were always very happy, but there wasn’t ever a consistent flow of high-value opportunities coming across their desk.
Every file arrived through word of mouth or Legal Aid. This was sustainable, but wasn’t a formula for growth.
Case load fluctuated from month-to-month and the partners had little say in the matters they took on. The private retainer clients the firm was built to serve simply weren’t finding them online.
Before coming to Playbook Digital, they had tried several other options.
- They spent $3,000 into Google Ads over three months and generated zero leads.
- They ran billboards near their office, but didn’t see any measurable results.
- They had someone they know built a website for them, but it was slow, wasn’t mobile-friendly, and was closer to a business card than a tool for earning trust.
Each effort ran on its own. Nothing connected, and nothing drove the results that the business needed.
The Solution: One Connected System
Rather than layering another disconnected tactic on top, Playbook rebuilt the foundation first and setup Google Ads after there was a strong marketing system in place that could actually convert the traffic it generated.
Step 1. Brand identity. We developed a full brand kit — every logo treatment (full colour, knockout, light, dark), a defined colour palette, and a typographic system built to read as credible to private clients.
Step 2. Website development. A 20-page WordPress site, SEO-optimized and mobile-first, with a dedicated page for each practice area. Playbook handled design, copywriting, and technical setup live within 60 days of signing.
Step 3. Local SEO and citations. Google Business Profile optimization, local citation building, and on-page SEO to strengthen organic visibility across Ontario.
Step 4. Google Ads. Campaigns organized by service area, each pointing to a dedicated landing page instead of a generic contact form. Attribution configured for both form fills and phone calls, so every dollar could be traced to an outcome.
The Results
Provident Law had its first paying client from Google Ads within 30 days of launch.
| Metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Total ad spend (7 months) | $11,378 |
| Tracked conversions | 133 |
| Cost per conversion | $86 |
| Conversions per month (avg.) | 19 |
The comparison is what matters here. The firm’s original $3,000 Google Ads attempt returned nothing. At this system’s cost per conversion, that same $3,000 buys roughly 35 tracked conversions.
Provident Law was able to run $2,000–$3,000 a month, scaling spend against demand with a calculated appraoch.
“Playbook Digital helped us improve our online visibility with a new website and generate more leads with effective Google Ad campaigns. Their marketing systems and support have made a real difference for our law firm.”

How This Impacted The Client’s Business
Provident Law no longer waits for the phone to ring. Criminal and real estate inquiries arrive consistently, from a channel the firm controls, at a cost it can forecast. At the volume the channel was producing, the firm began exploring bringing on an office manager to handle it — the clearest signal that this was a different business than the one that started.
Should Law Firms Run Google Ads?
For law firms in a similar spot — strong at the work, inconsistent at getting new files — the lesson isn’t “spend more on ads.” Ads only work as well as what they point to.
A slow, generic website and no brand credibility will burn through a $3,000 Google Ads budget just as fast as it did the first time around. Google Ads are a great way to increase case load and find new clients, but only when they are run with the proper website and follow up system setup to support them.
It depends on practice area and competition in your market, but Provident Law’s system runs on $2,000–$3,000 a month and produces a predictable, forecastable cost per client file. Below roughly $1,000/month after fees, most law firms won’t see enough volume to reliably optimize a campaign.
Provident Law had its first paying client within 30 days of launch. That’s faster than most — it happened because the campaigns pointed to dedicated landing pages and proper conversion tracking from day one, not a generic contact page.
The ads ran on top of a slow, non-mobile-friendly website with no clear brand or offer. Traffic arrived and had nowhere credible to convert. The second attempt worked because the brand, website, and SEO were fixed first.
Not always, but if your current site is slow, not mobile-friendly, or doesn’t clearly state what you handle and why a prospect should choose you, fixing that will do more for your conversion rate than any amount of extra ad spend.
Attribution has to cover both form fills and phone calls, since most legal inquiries still come in by phone. Provident Law’s campaigns track both, so every dollar spent can be traced to whether it produced a real file, not just a click.
